Other Interests

“As a child/teenager, I used to dream about becoming a U.N. translator. Although that didn’t happen, I have a passion for learning new languages, and I hope to return my foreign-language skills to the level they were at immediately post-college. In my free time I am an avid reader. I also love to go biking on the rail trails in Northern Vermont with my partner! I consider myself an amateur fiber artist and love to knit, crochet, sew, weave, embroider, and otherwise create beautiful and/or functional pieces. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention my unbridled passion for music, dance, and theatre.”

“I give clients advice in an honest and straightforward manner, and then help them develop a strategy to reach their goals.”

Kristen Connors

Bio:

Kristen Connors never planned on being a lawyer. She finally realized that she wanted to pursue a career in the law when she served as a union steward for UE Local 203 at City Market here in Burlington. She discovered that the work she was doing in representing her co-workers at grievance meetings, and educating them of their rights under their collective bargaining agreement, was very similar to what a lawyer does. In addition to her job at City Market and related duties of a Union Steward, Kristen also worked at the Peace & Justice Center for five years, first as an intern and volunteer, and then as a staff person. Educating both Vermont residents and out-of-state visitors about economic, racial, and other social justice issues inspired her to focus on these areas of the law when she entered law school. Kristen’s service on a restorative justice panel in Burlington, Vermont also shaped her view and appreciation for different justice models that had the potential to positively transform her community.

While in law school, Kristen focused primarily on public interest law. She completed student externships with the Federal Public Defender in the Northern District of Ohio, and at Catholic Charities-Migration and Refugee Services. As a third-year law student she worked in CWRU’s Immigration Clinic where she handled a variety of immigration cases including applications for asylum, humanitarian parole, green card applications, and a variety of other immigrant and non-immigrant visa applications. Kristen also served as the managing editor of the Canada-U.S. Law Journal during her third year of law school, and was a member of the Yemen Accountability Project, where she help co-author and edit two white papers about criminal accountability for state, individual, and corporate perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Yemeni civil war. Kristen was a member of CWRU Law’s International Criminal Court Moot Court team, which came in second place in the national ICC Moot Court competition, advancing the team to the international rounds where they competed (virtually) at the Hague in the summer of 2021. Kristen also helped revitalize CWRU Law’s student chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

After graduating from law school, and passing the bar exam, Kristen completed a post-graduate fellowship with Vermont Legal Aid where she helped support VLA’s low-income taxpayer clinic. There, Kristen learned about the federal tax law, and the tax problems many low-income Vermonters face. She was honored to be able to support and guide her clients through the complex and overwhelming process of addressing and rectifying tax liabilities and other issues they had with the IRS. Kristen joined Montroll, Oettinger & Barquist, P.C. on January 31, 2022, as a litigation associate and currently handles a variety of civil and family-law cases. She hopes to learn as much as she can from her exceptional colleagues and to continue to develop her advocacy skills so she can continue to be of service to her community.
